United Telephone is now offering personal web pages free
of charge to UTMA Internet subscribers. Please contact United
Telephone for details regarding content and space limitations.
Free web page hosting is for personal use by UTMA subscribers
only. For information regarding business, professional, and
commercial web hosting, please contact United Telephone.
United Telephone is providing this service as a convenience to our valued customers.
Because we are providing the page hosting for free, we will be unable to provide
any technical support beyond the instructions on this page. If you require additional
technical support, please feel free to have your personal page developed, designed,
and published by a professional web design firm, or ask a high-school kid to
help you.
Your personal web page location within your UTMA dial-up account may be accessed
using the Internet File Transfer Protocol (FTP). You will need to obtain FTP
software on your own. Advanced users may choose to use special content publishing
software, which may be configured to use FTP as the publication protocol. These
instructions describe how to use command-line FTP client software, such as the
FTP client included with Windows95 dial-up networking.
In order to activate your personal web page, you must first
create a special directory within your dial-up account at
UTMA where your web page will be stored:
Step
1
Start an ftp session with UTMA
- Click "Start"
- Select and click "Run"
- Type ftp www.utma.com in the combo box as shown below.
- Click OK.
- A window will come up similar to the one
below. You will need to log into the ftp server using
your existing account information.
- Type in your UTMA username at the FTP
user: prompt. (Replace "MY-USERNAME" with your
username.)
- Type in your UTMA password at the FTP password:
prompt

Step 2
Creating the web page directory
Create the public_html directory. This directory must be named "public_html",
in all lowercase letters, with an underscore separating the words public
and html. If the directory is improperly created, your web content will
not be accessible. If you have trouble viewing your personal web page,
come back to this step and verify that you have created your personal
web page directory correctly.
-
After you have successfully logged
in using ftp, type the following commands at the
FTP command prompt:
mkdir public_html
dir
Step 3
Uploading Files
- Now that you have created your personal web page
directory, you will be able to place web pages, images,
sounds and other web content in the directory. Although
only you may manipulate the files in your public_html
directory, anything you place in your public_html directory
will become publicly viewable to the entire Internet.
It is up to you to know how to create and maintain
your personal web page. Once you have created your
personal web page(or pages) and are ready to upload
them, go on to the next step.
- To upload files to your personal web directory:
- Log in to your account using the procedure in Step
1.
- type cd
public_html at the ftp> prompt.
- if necessary, use the lcd command
at the ftp prompt to change to the directory on your
computer containing the files you will be uploading.
- upload the files using the put or mput commands
at the ftp> prompt.
